2024-2205 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2024-2205 A resolution recognizing April 7-13,2024 as "National Library Week" in the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, "National Library Week" is a time to celebrate the many contributions of our nation's libraries, library workers, and the communities they serve; and, WHEREAS, the City's first library began in 1865 serving the Young Men's Association; in 1884 was adopted by the City and officially became a community library, and was officially renamed the Hedberg Public Library in 1996 following extensive renovations; and, WHEREAS, libraries have long served as trusted and treasured institutions for all members of the community regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio-economic status; and, WHEREAS, libraries offer opportunities for everyone to explore new worlds and become their best selves through access to technology, multimedia content, and educational programs; and, WHEREAS, the mission of Hedberg Public Library is to build community by providing inviting spaces to discover, share, create, and connect, and to hold dear the values of Inclusion, Respect, Access, Innovation, Service, and Excellence; and, WHEREAS, the library continues to provide first-rate service to the citizens of Janesville and its 30,477 library cardholders, circulating 573,611 physical and electronic items in 2023, welcoming 206,791 people into our two library locations and 158,491 to our website's digital space, providing 790 programs for 26,273 attendees, while also maintaining an active bookmobile; and, WHEREAS, the citizens of Janesville love their library and are very proud of the resources and services the library provides to the community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Janesville does hereby affirm and proclaim April 7-13, 2024, as National Library Week, and during this week, encourages all residents to visit their library to access resources and services and connect with their library.
