A resolution proclaiming September 2023 as Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk
Month in the City of Janesville.
WHEREAS, since 1993, the Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk has been held annually in
our community as an activity of the American Heart Association to promote heart health
and stroke awareness and provide an opportunity to fight back against heart disease
and stroke; and
WHEREAS, the Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk gives us a unique opportunity to come
together to honor survivors and remember those who have lost their lives to heart
disease and stroke; and
WHEREAS, the Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk has been named in honor of the late
Bert Blain, Co-founder of Blain's Farm & Fleet, who lost his life to heart disease 10 days
before the inaugural Heart Walk in Janesville he was co-chair of alongside his daughter,
Jane Blain Gilbertson, CEO and Owner of Blain's Farm & Fleet; and
WHEREAS, the Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk is the only American Heart Association
Heart Walk in the nation named after an individual; and
WHEREAS, funds raised support the American Heart Association's mission of saving
lives and creating a world with healthy hearts and minds— by funding needed heart and
stroke research and teaching heart-healthy habits; and
WHEREAS, through community events like the Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk, the
American Heart Association has funded more than $5 billion in heart and stroke
research; and
WHEREAS, over the past 29 years, the Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk has raised over
$3 million to help fund heart and stroke research. educational programs, and advocacy
efforts throughout Wisconsin to equitably improve and save lives.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of
Janesville recognizes September 2023 as Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk Month in the
City of Janesville and call upon our citizens to acknowledge this unique and effective
means of enhancing community goodwill while raising funds for the American Heart
Association.
