2023-2150 RESOLUTION NO. 2023-2150
A resolution recognizing August 11, 2023 as "Carrie Jacobs-Bond Day"
in the City of Janesville.
WHEREAS, Carrie Minetta Jacobs-Bond was born in the City of Janesville in 1862; and
WHEREAS, she was born in the house of her maternal grandparents at the corner of
Pleasant Street (now known as Court Street) and Oakhill Avenue; and
WHEREAS, Carrie Jacobs-Bond was an American singer, pianist, and songwriter who
published more than 170 pieces of popular sheet music from the 1890s through the early
1940s; and
WHEREAS, in 1896, she established her own sheet music publishing company after
struggling to enter a male-dominated industry, becoming one of the few women in the
industry to own every word of every song she wrote; and
WHEREAS, Carrie Jacobs-Bond performed in Europe for United States soldiers of World
War I, providing entertainment and relief during wartime; and
WHEREAS, Carrie Jacobs-Bond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970;
and
WHEREAS, in addition to music, she produced written works such as children's poetry
and an autobiography and drew artwork for her own publications; and
WHEREAS, Carrie Jacobs-Bond overcame poverty, family struggles, and the death of
loved ones, showing resiliency in the face of life's difficulties; and
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville is proud of residents that distinguish themselves in
culturally significant ways such as art, entertainment, politics, and sports; and
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville honored Carrie Jacobs-Bond by naming the park near
her birth site Bond Park, where monuments dedicated to her life are placed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of
Janesville recognizes August 11, 2023 as "Carrie Jacobs-Bond Day" to encourage
residents of this City to increase their knowledge about the history, achievements, and
contributions made by Carrie Jacobs-Bond to society and the community.
