2023-2103 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2023-2103 A resolution in honor of the 170th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, the first settlers to the area arrived in the summer of 1835; and, WHEREAS, in 1836, the territorial legislature established the county seat, and the US Postmaster General granted a post office with the name Janesville; and, WHEREAS, the act to approve the Janesville City Charter was passed in the state legislature and later by the Wisconsin Secretary of State in March 1853; and, WHEREAS, the Janesville Gazette publicly noticed the Janesville City Charter in April 1853; and, WHEREAS, the Janesville City Charter stated that "From and after the first Tuesday in April next the district of country in the county of Rock, contained within the limits and boundaries hereinafter described, shall be a city, by the name of Janesville..."; and, WHEREAS, the first Tuesday in April 1853 was April 5; and WHEREAS, the City of Janesville honors its local history and citizens and uses the Squiggly Tree logo to indicate its commitment to growth for the community now and in the future. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Janesville does hereby recognize Tuesday, April 5, 2023, as the 170th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Janesville.
