2023-2102 RESOLUTION NO. 2023-2102
A resolution proclaiming March 2023 as "Women's History Month"
in the City of Janesville and celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Janesville
branch of the American Association of University Women.
WHEREAS, American women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made
historical contributions to the growth and strength of our Nation in countless recorded and
unrecorded ways and have served as early leaders at the forefront of every major
progressive social change movement; and
WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a critical economic,
cultural, and social role in every sphere of the Nation by constituting a significant portion
of the labor force and working inside and outside of the home; and
WHEREAS, American women have been leaders in not only securing their own rights of
suffrage and equal opportunity but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation
movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other
movements, especially the peace movement, which create a more fair and just society
for all; and
WHEREAS, the Janesville Branch of the American Association of University Women
(AAUW) was founded on April 23, 1923, to advocate for women and girls and to reach
gender equity in education, economic security, and leadership; and
WHEREAS, AAUW— Janesville has worked tirelessly to advance women in leadership,
remove bias from education; embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, and close the
gender pay gap; and
WHEREAS, AAUW — Janesville has consistently been noted for its work that connects
and rallies advocates at the local, state, national, and global levels to empower women
and girls through exchange trips to China and the Netherlands; and
WHEREAS, AAUW — Janesville promotes and supports the Janesville Public Schools
and students through projects such as middle school "Choose Your Shoes" career
exploration, the high school "Dreams Club," "Stay Safe," and "STEM Tech Savvy."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of
Janesville recognizes March 2023 as "Women's History Month" to encourage residents
of this City to increase their knowledge about the many contributions made by women
throughout the history of our Nation and the State of Wisconsin; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Janesville
celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Janesville branch of the American Association of
University Women and congratulates the branch for its significant contributions to
empowering women and girls through advocacy, education, and research and proclaims
April 23, 2023 as AAUW— Janesville Day in the City of Janesville.
