2021-1906 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2021 - 1906
A resolution in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Naming of the Hedberg Public
Library.
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville officially adopted a public library in 1884; and,
WHEREAS, in 1903 the first permanent home of the public library was 64 S. Main St.
costing $35,000 and built by J.P. Cullen and Brother of Janesville, with financial support
from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation and the estate of F. S. Eldred of Janesville; and,
WHEREAS, the library outgrew this building in the early sixties and a new library was
built at its current location, 316 S. Main St. costing $939,000 including a $142,000
federal grant and a $780,000 city bond issue; and,
WHEREAS, in 1993 the library, which had reached its intended capacity by 1979, was
given $4.66 million from Don and Gerry Hedberg to renovate the existing building, an
expansion that would eventually cost $8 million; and,
WHEREAS, the Janesville Public Library was renamed as the Hedberg Public Library in
honor of this tremendous gift to the City of Janesville; and,
WHEREAS, the library continues to provide first-rate service to the citizens of Janesville
and its 49,008 library cardholders, circulating 409,778 items in 2020, hosting 127,666
people and providing 660 programs in a pandemic shortened year, while also
maintaining a bookmobile and branch library; and,
WHEREAS, the citizens of Janesville love their library and are very proud of the
resources and services the library provides to the community; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of
Janesville does hereby recognize Monday, June 14th, 2021 as the 25th anniversary of
the Naming of the Hedberg Public Library.
