2020-1818 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2020 - 1818 A resolution proclaiming October 11, 2020 as "Clergy Appreciation Day" in the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, Clergy Appreciation National Day of Honor first began in 1992, and later was renamed Clergy Appreciation Day or Pastor Appreciation Day; and WHEREAS, Clergy Appreciation Day sets aside time to offer appreciation for the spiritual guidance of men and women of the clergy throughout the different denominations and faiths, of which are more than 300 practiced in the United States; and WHEREAS, spiritual leaders have a tendency to serve their communities whether it is within their ministry or outside of the church walls; and WHEREAS, the City of Janesville benefits from two Fire Department and six Police Department volunteer chaplains that are on-call and spend countless hours providing support to firefighter/paramedics, officers, and the public for critical incidents; and WHEREAS, without pay, police and fire chaplains undergo training, attend and coordinate events, and generally support the first responders that serve the Janesville community; and WHEREAS, notably, earlier in 2020, the Janesville community experienced eight deaths within about a week, and the police chaplains responded to all of these calls to assist family members, allowing police officers to focus on the investigations; and WHEREAS, in the summer of 2020 when a child tragically drowned in the Rock River, police and fire chaplains were on-scene to provide comfort and assist in managing the people side of the tragedy; and WHEREAS, men and women of the clergy of all faiths make sacrifices and devote their lives to serving. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of Janesville proclaims October 11, 2020 as "Clergy Appreciation Day" in the City of Janesville, and on behalf of the citizens of Janesville, expresses its appreciation for the contributions made by clergy members in the Janesville community.
