2020-1764 RESOLUTION NO. 2020-1764 A resolution proclaiming September 21-27, 2020 as "Bike to Work Week" and September 22, 2020 as "Bike to Work Day" in the City of Janesville WHEREAS, May is traditionally recognized nationwide as "Bike Month," and WHEREAS, "Bike to Work Week" was temporarily postponed due to extraordinary circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic; and WHEREAS, cycling benefits health, fitness, outdoor exercise, enjoyment of nature, stress reduction, and peace of mind; and WHEREAS, cycling benefits the environment as a clean, non-intrusive, low-cost, congestion- free, and pollution-free means of transportation; and WHEREAS, creating a bicycle-friendly community is an important goal of the City in pursuit of improved personal health, reduced health care costs through active living, reduced traffic congestion, a cleaner environment, and increased tourism opportunities across the City; and WHEREAS, the City implements new bike lanes when resurfacing City streets and currently maintains over 19 miles of on-street bike lanes; and WHEREAS, the City and partners including the Janesville Area MPO, Janesville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Rock Trail Coalition, and Velo Club are developing wayfinding signage to be installed along portions of the Peace Trail and Ice Age Trail in the spring of 2021; and WHEREAS, Janesville has received an Honorable Mention from the League of American Bicyclists for the "Bike Friendly Community" designation. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT the Janesville City Council hereby proclaims the week of September 21 through September 27, 2020 as "Bike to Work Week" and Tuesday, September 22, 2020 as "Bike to Work Day" in the City of Janesville. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, THAT the Janesville City Council reminds citizens to "Share the Road" safely with bicyclists.
