2020-1753 Resolution No. 2020-1753 A resolution recognizing April 19 — 25, 2020 as "National Library Week" in the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, "National Library Week" is a time to celebrate the many contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers on the communities they serve; and WHEREAS, the American Library Association first sponsored "National Library Week" in 1958 and this celebration is now observed annually during the month of April; and WHEREAS, libraries are an important aspect of any healthy community providing valuable resources to families, small businesses, and community partners; and WHEREAS, the City's first library began in 1865 serving the Young Men's Association; in 1884 was adopted by the City and officially became a community library; and was officially renamed Hedberg Public Library in 1996 following extensive renovations; and WHEREAS, the mission of Hedberg Public Library includes providing a welcoming and accommodating environment, building and maintaining diverse collections, maximizing access to information and resources, creating partnerships throughout the community, and meeting and exceeding the expectations of the community; and WHEREAS, Hedberg Public Library continues to accomplish its mission by serving the residents of Janesville during this difficult and unique time by providing flexible services and resources, providing assistance to the Clerk-Treasurer's Office for the April 7, 2020 election, staffing the Emergency Operations Center, and serving as a Janesville Police Department "sub-station". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Janesville City Council on this 13th day of April, 2020, that the week of April 19—25, 2020 be recognized as "National Library Week" in the City of Janesville; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City of Janesville to call upon all Janesville citizens to celebrate "National Library Week" by recognizing the adaptability and dedication of Hedberg Public Library to serving the Janesville community.
