2020-1727 RESOLUTION NO. 2020-1727 A resolution proclaiming January 20, 2020 as "Martin Luther King Jr. Day" in the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., altered the trajectory of the United States forever through his leadership, service, and clarity of vision; and WHEREAS, in the brief time Dr. King walked upon this earth, he devoted his life to strengthening the content of the American character and called on this Nation to live up to its founding principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all its citizens; and WHEREAS, through his determination, spirit, and resolve, Dr. King helped lift souls and lead one of the greatest movements for equality and freedom in history; and WHEREAS, the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. King teaches us that equality requires both the absence of oppression and economic opportunity; and WHEREAS, Dr. King's life will always shine as a light for those without hope and as an example to be emulated by all who care about their fellow human beings, regardless of race, religion, class, or nationality; and WHEREAS, as we observe Dr. King's birthday, the City of Janesville encourages all community members to celebrate his memory by performing acts of kindness through service to others. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of Janesville recognize January 20, 2020 as "Martin Luther King Jr. Day", and encourage the residents of the City to celebrate and honor Dr. King's legacy and remember the profound impact his life and message had on the civil rights movement and this democratic nation.
