2019-1693 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2019 - 1693
A resolution proclaiming November 2019 as "National American Indian/Alaska
Native Heritage Month" in the City of Janesville.
WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives were the original inhabitants of the
land that now constitutes the United States; and
WHEREAS, American Indian tribal governments developed the fundamental principles
of freedom of speech and separation of powers that form the foundation of the United
States Government; and
WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives have traditionally exhibited a respect
for the finiteness of natural resources through a reverence for the earth; and
WHEREAS, despite a history marked by adversity, oppression, and violence, American
Indians and Alaska Natives deserve to be recognized for their individual and collective
contributions to the betterment of society; and
WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives have served with valor in all of
America's wars beginning with the Revolutionary War through the recent conflicts in Iraq
and Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives have made distinct and important
contributions to the United States and the rest of the world in many fields, including
agriculture, medicine, education, and art; and
WHEREAS, the Janesville area was home to many Woodland Native American tribes
including the Winnebago, Ho-Chunk, Potawatomi, Sauk, and Fox tribes.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of
Janesville recognizes November 2019 as "National American Indian/Alaska Native
Heritage Month" in the interest of expanding awareness about the contributions of
American Indians and Alaska Natives, and encouraging self-esteem, pride, and self-
awareness of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the Janesville community.
