RESOLUTION NO. 2004-92
A Resolution providing that the road section between Beloit Avenue and Jackson Street be
renamed Reuther Way (File Resolution No. 2004-92)
WHEREAS, Walter, Victor, and Roy Reuther were all actively involved in the shaping and advancement
of the United Autoworkers Union; and
WHEREAS, Walter Reuther served as the President of the United Auto Workers from 1946 to 1970; and
WHEREAS, Walter Reuther's commitment to Unionized labor forged the way for benefits such as; year
by year, workers gained, comprehensive health-care programs, tuition-refund programs, life insurance,
profit sharing, severance pay, prepaid legal-service plans, bereavement pay, jury-duty pay, plus
improvements in vacations, holidays and rest time; and
WHEREAS, Walter Reuther's negotiation of decent working, health and safety conditions, coupled with
a sound grievance procedure, added immeasurably to the personal sense of dignity and self-respect of the
worker; and
WHEREAS, Walther Reuther viewed the role of the union as a social movement aimed at uplifting the
community within the guarantees of democratic values; and
WHEREAS, the significant contribution the UA W has made in our community and the impact that the
plant and workers have on our local economy; and
WHEREAS, this road section provides vital link to the General Motors plant and will play an
instrumental role in its continuing presence in the City of Janesville.
NOW, THEREFORE, LET BE IT RESOL YED By the Common Council of the City of Janesville,
on the 6th day of December, provide that the section of road between Beloit Avenue and Jackson Street
shall be renamed Reuther Way.
BE IT FURTHER RESOL YED by the Common Council that all Janesville citizens are called upon to
honor the commitment to human rights and community development that Walter Reuther and his brothers
championed during their entire lives.
