2019-1667 Resolution No. 2019-1667 A resolution proclaiming June 23, 2019 as "International Widows Day" in the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, there are currently nearly 14 million widows in the United States, 258 million widows globally, and 585,000 children who are directly affected by the loss of a father; and WHEREAS, widows across the globe have been historically undervalued, stigmatized, isolated, and voiceless socially, economically, emotionally, and spiritually; and WHEREAS, in 2010, the United Nations recognized June 23 as the first International Widows Day of Awareness and now this day is recognized annually throughout the United States and across the world; and WHEREAS, the Modern Widows Club, an Orlando-founded national nonprofit, leads the United States in advocacy, mentoring, and leadership for women in widowhood; and WHEREAS, the Janesville chapter of the Modern Widows Club was established in 2014; and WHEREAS, the Janesville chapter serves to empower women in widowhood and provide them with the tools to lean into life, build resilience, and make positive differences in the their own lives and those of others in their communities; and WHEREAS, supportive communities are able to greatly assist and empower widows and their families to become thriving and vital members of society through understanding the crucial needs in widows' lives and aiding in the development of services, programs, outreach, and community involvement; and WHEREAS, by giving them recognition and a voice, widows shall be empowered to discover all that is available to them in order to move forward and rebuild their purposeful and meaningful lives with the support of the community in which they reside. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of Janesville recognizes June 23, 2019 as "International Widows Day" in the City of Janesville.
