RESOLUTION NO. 2004-087
A Resolution providing that the Fire Training Center shall be named the Chief Art
Stearns Fire Training Center (File Resolution No. 2004-087)
WHEREAS, Chief Art Stearns was born and raised in Janesville, Wisconsin and
graduated from Janesville Senior High School in 1955; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a
member of a fire-fighting crash crew; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns demonstrated his commitment to public service and safety
by serving in the Janesville Fire Department first as a Firefighter and then as a
Lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns was appointed Fire Chief on May 14, 1979; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns exemplified excellent customer service and used his role as
Fire Chief to reach out to the citizens of Janesville through public involvement; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns was a proponent of continued advancement and education
of himself and those that served in his department; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns was the catalyst for the construction of the Fire Training
Center in 1985; and
WHEREAS, the Fire Training Center is an integral component of the recruitment and
ongoing training of Janesville's Fire Department personnel; and
WHEREAS, Chief Stearns retired from the City of Janesville on January 2, 1990, after
more than thirty years of invaluable foresight, leadership and service to the residents of
the Janesville community; and
WHEREAS, a fitting tribute to Chief Stearns' admirable accomplishments and strategic
thinking are appropriate.
NOW, THEREFORE, LET BE IT RESOLVED By the Common Council of the City of
Janesville, on the 11th day of October, that the Fire Training Center shall be named the
Chief Art Stearns Fire Training Center; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Common Council that all Janesville citizens are
encouraged to thank and remember the exemplary service of Chief Art Stearns.
