2019-1612 RESOLUTION NO. 2019 - 1612
A resolution supporting the Bird City Wisconsin designation for the City of Janesville,
Wisconsin
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville is known as Wisconsin's Park Place; and
WHEREAS, Janesville has been designated a "Tree City" for fourteen years; and
WHEREAS, Janesville's trees and parks provide habitat for a variety of birds; and
WHEREAS, many residents of Janesville enjoy watching and feeding birds; and
WHEREAS, Bird City Wisconsin is an effort to encourage bird conservation in communities
throughout Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, a group of Janesville residents have voluntarily organized themselves into a team
to continue to support the Bird City Wisconsin designation; and
WHEREAS, the Parks Division and the Bird City team believe Janesville meets the criteria for
remaining a "Bird City"; and
WHEREAS, being recognized as a "Bird City" will add to Janesville's reputation as an
environmentally friendly community; and
WHEREAS, the Bird City planning team expects to plan, host, and support an annual Bird
Festival to encourage ongoing interest in birds and remain in compliance with Bird City
requirements; and
WHEREAS, a number of local organizations have shown their support for the City of Janesville
to become a "Bird City", including Friends of Rockport Park; Friends of Riverside Park; Rock
Trail Coalition; League of Women Voters of Janesville; Green-Rock Audubon Society; Ned
Hollister Bird Club; Rotary Botanical Gardens; Rock County Conservationists; and the Janesville
Urban Forestry Alliance; and
WHEREAS, the cost of application has been provided by generous donors; and
WHEREAS, the Parks Division recommends the Janesville City Council continue support of the
efforts of the volunteer team in their quest for re-applying for the Bird City Wisconsin
designation.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of Janesville
that the Janesville City Council authorize the Bird City planning team in conjunction with the
Parks Division to make application for the City of Janesville to remain a "Bird City" under the
auspices of Bird City Wisconsin.
