2018-1582 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2018-1582
A resolution proclaiming October 15, 2018 as "Blind Americans Equality Day" and
"White Cane Safety Day" in the City of Janesville.
WHEREAS, the President of the United States has designated October 15, 2018 as "Blind
Americans Equality Day"; and
WHEREAS, the white cane serves many purposes including as a symbol of independence and
to make citizens more fully aware of the need for motorists to exercise special care for blind
and visually impaired individuals; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of these designations is to recognize that those who are blind or
visually impaired have the same rights and responsibilities as other citizens, to travel, work,
raise families, and pursue their various interests; and
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville is now, and has been the home since 1949 to the Wisconsin
School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, whose graduates continue to contribute to the
quality of life of our City; and
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville is justifiably proud of its blind and visually impaired citizens,
who contribute greatly to the overall quality of life in our area; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL at its regular meeting
assembled this 8th day of October, 2018 that the City of Janesville recognizes October 15,
2018 as "Blind Americans Equality Day" and "White Cane Safety Day" in the City of Janesville.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we call upon the citizens of Janesville to recognize
the many contributions that those who are blind or visually impaired continue to make to our
community.
