2018-1575 RESOLUTION NO. 2018-1575
A resolution proclaiming September 9 — 15, 2018 as
"Suicide Prevention Week" in the City of Janesville.
WHEREAS, suicide is a major public health issue that requires vigilant attention and preventative
action; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control reported that in 2016, nearly 45,000 Americans age ten
or older died by suicide, making suicide the tenth leading cause of death; and
WHEREAS, in 2016, there were 866 reported deaths by suicide in Wisconsin, or 15 deaths per
100,000 in population; and
WHEREAS, each death by suicide directly impacts numerous family members, friends, loved ones,
and by extension, the entire community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Janesville is committed to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and supporting
its partners in ensuring that those in need have access to services by healthcare providers trained in
best practices to reduce suicide risk; and
WHEREAS, no single suicide prevention effort will be sufficient or appropriate for all populations or
communities, and therefore, all are asked to join together and take a stand to help those who are
contemplating suicide.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of Janesville
recognize September 9 — 15, 2018 as "Suicide Prevention Week", and encourage residents of this
City to participate through education about the warning signs and how to best help those most in
need.
