2017-1416 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2017 — 1416
A resolution proclaiming April 2017 as "National Child Abuse Prevention Month" in the City of
Janesville.
WHEREAS, our community has a fundamental obligation to ensure the basic rights and needs of every
child are met; and
WHEREAS, abused and neglected children are among the most vulnerable in our community, and the
agencies serving them are overloaded; and
WHEREAS, out of the 15 largest counties in the state (including Milwaukee), Rock County has the
highest rate of child abuse reports per capita, and has for many years; and
WHEREAS, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Rock County plays a vital role in helping
ensure these children's needs are being met by training everyday citizens to advocate for their needs;
and
WHEREAS, CASA of Rock County advocates are a formidable force that fights for these rights; and
WHEREAS, CASA of Rock County advocates get to know the children, their teachers, family members,
and interviews professionals involved in their life, in order to make recommendations to the Juvenile
Court judge about what is in the children's best interest; and
WHEREAS, CASA of Rock County has over 100 children on our waiting list, creating a dire need for
more volunteer advocates, community support, and donations; and.
WHEREAS, CASA of Rock County needs the community's help to reach our goal of being able to
provide a CASA advocate for every child in need;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL of the City of Janesville
recognizes April 2017 as "National Child Abuse Prevention Month" to encourage public awareness of child
abuse and neglect and to support those agencies that play a vital role in ensuring the needs of abused and
neglected children are being met.
