2016-1344 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2016 -1344
A resolution recognizing September 21, 2016 as "International Day of Peace" in the City of
Janesville.
WHEREAS, the first International Day of Peace was observed on September 21, 1982; and
WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace is a co- operative movement to unite the strengths of
existing organizations and projects toward making Peace a practical reality in the 21st century, marked
worldwide by millions of people; and
WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace has been celebrated in Janesville annually since 2011; and
WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace provides an opportunity for our citizens to connect with one
another and to combat alienation and mistrust; and
WHEREAS, local groups supporting and sponsoring the International Day of Peace include Diversity
Action Team of Rock County, Rock Valley Fellowship of Reconciliation, Hedberg Public Library, Rock
Valley Veterans for Peace; and
WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace will be observed on September 24, 2016, from 1 -4PM, at
Hedberg Public Library in Janesville, as well as special events on September 21 and 23;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of Janesville on this 12
day of September, 2016, that the day of September 21, 2016 be recognized as "International Day of
Peace" in the City of Janesville; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Common Council to call upon all Janesville citizens to support
celebrating a day of global ceasefire and non - violence.
