2016-1288 (2) Resolution No. 2016 -1288 A Resolution supporting the creation of a General Motors Legacy Fund WHEREAS, General Motors (GM) operated in Janesville on the current site since 1919; and WHEREAS, generations of Janesville residents worked at GM's Janesville Assembly Plant itself or in surrounding companies that sold components or services to the plant; and WHEREAS, at its peak in the late 1970s, more than 7,000 Janesville area residents entrusted their livelihoods with GM; and WHEREAS, GM completed the "official closure" of the Janesville Assembly Plant in late 2015; and WHEREAS, Janesville was a GM town, and our community is extremely proud of GM's role in our rich history; and WHEREAS, GM's legacy should continue in this community in perpetuity; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Common Council of the City of Janesville does hereby support the City's request for the creation of a General Motors Legacy Fund endowed with $25 million from the General Motors Company to enhance economic revitalization, improve workforce development, and sustain community development within Janesville in honor of the many generations of GM employees who served over these more than nine decades.
