2014-1141 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2014 -1141 A resolution recognizing October 15, 2014 as White Cane Safety Day and October as Meet the Blind Month WHEREAS, for the last five years, the National Federation of the Blind has celebrated the month of October as Meet the Blind Month, in recognition of the professional, personal, and community activities of blind Americans; and WHEREAS, since 1964, October 15 of each year has been declared, by Presidential Proclamation as National White Cane Safety Day; and WHEREAS, the City of Janesville, among its many other cultural and educational institutions, contains the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the oldest publicly- funded school in our state, having been part of our community since 1850; and WHEREAS, the City of Janesville is justifiably proud of its blind citizens, who contribute greatly to the overall quality of life in our area; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL that the City of Janesville recognizes October 15, 2014 as White Cane Safety Day and the month of October as Meet the Blind Month, and urges drivers to take special note of blind and visually impaired pedestrians, and observe the Wisconsin White Cane law.
