2014-1134 FILE RESOLUTION NO. 2014 -1134
A resolution renaming the Municipal Building to City Hall
WHEREAS, the City's first City Hall was constructed in 1901 at a cost of $45,000 and
consisted of three floors with a total of 16,960 square feet; and
WHEREAS, the former City Hall served the City well for many years but did not have the
capacity to accommodate the personnel to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding community;
and
WHEREAS, a new City Hall was constructed in 1967 at a cost of $1,650,000 and consisted of
four floors with a total of 42,800 square feet; and
WHEREAS, the new City Hall was renamed the Municipal Building on September 5, 1967; and
WHEREAS, the new City Hall was renamed the Municipal Building due to its modern design,
"to represent faith in the City's future and stands as a challenge to later generations to
maintain a municipal government as efficient and inspiring as the building which houses it ";
and
WHEREAS, Council Vice President Liebert and Councilmember Bobzien have asked for the
Council to consider changing the name of the Municipal Building back to City Hall to make our
local government appear more welcoming and open; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL that the City of
Janesville recognizes the City's administrative office, the Municipal Building, now as City Hall.
