WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States of America has designated the week of May
11 th tO be dedicated as "National Police Week" and the day of May 15th each year to be "Peace
Officers' Memorial Day"; and
WHEREAS, Law Enforcement Officers are our guardians of life and property, defenders of the
individual right to be free, and dedicated to the preservation of life, liberty and justice; and
WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities,
hazards, and sacrifices of their law enforcement agency, and that members of our law enforcement
agency recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them
against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against
oppression; and
WHEREAS, the Janesville City Council desires to honor the valor, service and dedication of
the Police Officers that serve the City of Janesville.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of Janesville on
this the 12th day of May 2003, that the week of May 11th tO May 17th be observed as "Police Week",
and call upon all Janesville citizens to especially honor and show our appreciation for the Police
Officers of the City of Janesville by deed, remark and attitude; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Common Council that the day of May 15th be
proclaimed to be "Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and that flags be flown at half-staff on this day in
honor of those men and women who have lost their lives in the performance of their duties, while
protecting their fellow citizens and communities.
