98-1202REVISED ORDINANCE NO. 98-1202 An ordinance amending provisions of Janesville's Sign Ordinance to allow projecting signs in National Register or Locally Designated Historic Districts in downtown Janesville (Sign Overlay District D). THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JANESVILLE DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I. Section 14.28.120 D of the Code of General Ordinances is hereby added to read as follows: twelve (12) inches. 5. D. One projecting sign may be permitted for each parcel or for each thirty (30) feet of street frontage. Multiple projecting signs on one parcel shall be spaced a minimum of thirty (30) feet apart, measured horizontally. 1. Such signs shall not extend more than four (4) feet perpendicular from the building or ½ the width of the sidewalk from the property line to the face of the curb, whichever is less. Signs shall not extend above the roof line. Projecting signs shall not exceed twelve (12) square feet per face. Signs should be pinned away from the wall at least six (6) inches, but no more than Projecting signs shall only contain the business name or services provided. Advertising of specific brands is prohibited. 6. Such signs shall not be changeable message boards or letter boards, unless the sign is for the purpose of a theater marquee. 7. Projecting signs shall be exterior lit. Interior lit signs and signs utilizing neon lighting are prohibited. All blinking and flashing signs are prohibited. Spot lighting, used to illuminate the sign, must be attached to the building. 8. Only those properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places or located in a Locally Designated Historic Overlay District will be permitted to erect projecting signs. 10. All projecting signs will be reviewed by the city's Historic Commission, in accordance with Section 18.36.070B.2. of the Code of General Ordinances; and such signs are to be consistent or historically sensitive to the building design.
