RESOLUTION NO. 2006-323
A resolution Recognizing the late Mr. Lew Mittness for his service
to the Janesville community
WHEREAS, Mr. Lew Mittness served in the United States Army in the Korean War as a
Sergeant First Class from 1951 - 1953; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mittness moved to Janesville in 1959 and taught History and Social
Studies at Marshall Middle School for eight years; and
WHEREAS, in 1964, Mr. Mittness was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly and
served until 1976; and
WHEREAS, while in the Assembly, Mr. Mittness was very involved with issues related
to protecting Wisconsin's environment and was the Chair of the Natural Resources
Committee from 1968 - 1976; and
WHEREAS, in 1976, Mr. Mittness was appointed the Executive Secretary of the Public
Service Commission and served in that role until 1981, when he was appointed the
Sergeant of Arms for the Wisconsin State Assembly; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mittness was also involved with local government and served as a City
of Janesville Council member from 1987 - 1989 and later served as a School District of
Janesville Board of Education Commissioner from 1991 - 1994; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mittness epitomized a dedicated public servant, and a fitting tribute to
him for his work to better the Janesville community is appropriate;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED By the Common Council of the City of
Janesville, on the 24th day of July, 2006, that the City of Janesville posthumously
recognize Mr. Lew Mittness for his admirable accomplishments and his passion for
helping others; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Common Council that all Janesville citizens are
called upon to acknowledge and appreciate the late Mr. Lew Mittness for his exemplary
service and dedication to the Janesville community.
