2026-2450RESOLUTION NO. 2026-2450 A resolution recognizing August 11, 2026, as Carrie Jacobs-Bond Day in the City of Janesville. WHEREAS, Carrie Minetta Jacobs‑Bond was born in Janesville on August 11, 1862, in her maternal grandparents’ home at the corner of Pleasant Street (now Court Street) and Oakhill Avenue; and WHEREAS, she demonstrated remarkable musical ability from an early age and persevered through significant personal hardship, including poverty, the loss of family members, and the challenge of supporting herself and her son; and WHEREAS, through determination and creative talent, Carrie Jacobs‑Bond became one of America’s most influential early songwriters, publishing more than 170 pieces of music from the 1890s through the early 1940s; and WHEREAS, in 1896, she founded her own sheet‑music publishing company, becoming the first woman in the United States to own and publish her own songs; and WHEREAS, her works, including “I Love You Truly” and “A Perfect Day,” achieved national acclaim, with “I Love You Truly” becoming one of the first songs by a woman to sell over one million copies; and WHEREAS, she performed for several U.S. presidents and entertained American soldiers in Europe during World War I, further demonstrating her cultural impact and service to the nation; and WHEREAS, the City of Janesville has honored her legacy through monuments in Bond Park and a memorial at 402 E. Milwaukee Street, recognizing her deep historical ties to the community; and WHEREAS, Carrie Jacobs‑Bond’s life exemplifies resilience, innovation, and artistic achievement, culminating in her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970; and WHEREAS, the City of Janesville takes pride in residents who distinguish themselves in culturally significant ways and seeks to recognize contributions that have shaped both local and national history; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Janesville hereby recognizes August 11, 2026, as Carrie Jacobs‑Bond Day, encouraging residents to learn about and celebrate her achievements, legacy, and lasting contributions to American music and the Janesville community.
