SUBJECT: Authorization for the Police Department to Accept a Justice
Assistance Grant in the amount of $69,874.00 from the Wisconsin
Office of Justice Assistance
Executive Summary
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the Janesville Police
Department, Beloit Police Department, and Town of Beloit Police Department
received a Justice Assistance Grant from the Wisconsin Office of Justice
Assistance. The grant in the amount of $69,874.00 will be used to cover the
costs of training officers in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training.
Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training is a comprehensive five-day, 40–hour
training designed to assist law enforcement in recognizing and understanding the
signs and symptoms of mental illness including depression, bipolar disorder,
schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, as well as other associated illnesses
including development & cognitive disorders and dementia.
The grant will allow the Janesville Police Department to train approximately 12
supervisors and officers in CIT. There is no cost to the City of Janesville for this
training. The training is tentatively scheduled for the week of September 10,
2012.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends the acceptance of this Justice Assistance Grant.
City Manager Recommendation
The City Manager concurs with the recommendation.
