City of Janesville Historic Commission Minutes April 11, 2011 Community Development Conference Room 4th Floor 18 N. Jackson St., Janesville, WI Present: Dan Atwood, Britten Grafft, Janine Peterson, Susan Thompson. City Staff: Gale Price 1. Call To Order. Dan Atwood called the meeting to order at 5:19 pm 2. Comments from the Public: None. 3. Minutes of the February 28, 2011 Regular Meeting “C”: A motion was made by Susan Thompson, seconded by Britten Grafft to approve the consent agenda with the request of Dan Atwood to move discussion item #5 after item #7. Motion carried. 4. Discussion with Jackie Wood about Space and Equipment at Old Towne Mall for May Expo: Jackie said the presenters will be speaking in the lower part of the mall where there is plenty of space for people to sit. Vendors and refreshments will be located on the first floor. It would be best if the vendors set up in the middle of the Mall to the Main Street doors. Vendors can set up the Friday. The mall is open until 6:00 pm. Vendors can also set up Saturday morning at 6:00 am. Jackie has chairs, 6 tables, and 6 easels and a screen for the presenters. There may be a need for a lap top computer. Vendors can bring there own tables if they have them. The Expo opens at 9:00 am and runs until 1:00 pm. Dan will go Friday pm to help set up. He will also check in with Bruce for use of his van to transport tables, etc. Vendors include: Ron Sutterlin – will need a table Beneficial Insulation – table Chad Barnes – table Sherwin Williams – table Jim Terrell – table Judy and Ken Adler – table The Commission reviewed the presenters. Rich Fletcher will have a display regarding the gas station. Britten Grafft will make a poster for Jackie to distribute around town. The theme of the workshop is “Preservation is Local”. Jackie Wood distributed a Janesville Woman’s History Pamphlet that was part of the grant for the mural project. 5. Update on the April 13 DDA Town Hall Meeting: Gale and Dan met on Friday to go over the presentation for the Town Hall meeting. Gale will copy the handouts of the flow chart and rezoning process. He mentioned the Pastor of the Congregational Church talked with him and is interested in commenting. Dan reminded commission members to enter at the Parker Drive entrance to M&I Bank before 5:30 pm Britten will update the th DDA at their meeting on April 12. 6. Nominations for Historic Preservation Awards: Gale Price distributed the first th nomination received. Additional nominations will come in the packet for the April 25 meeting. The deadline was extended. Gale notified the Janesville Gazette and other media. The information is on the city’s website as well. 7.Update on May Expo and Workshop: Dan Atwood reviewed a check list of activities developed by Tara. City Planning is responsible for the P.R., mailings, post cards, plates, napkins, food, coffee, doughnuts, and ice. The Historic Commission sets the date and gets the speaker. The following people agreed to do the following: Gale Price will bring the coolers and ice. Dan Atwood will pick up the display boards at the city and take to Old Towne Mall. Gale Price will reserve the projector and computer for speakers. The Historic Commission will have a table with a variety of things. Historic District booklets will be sold at $2.00 Britten will send Gale a copy of Fred Harmon’s handouts for windows for copying. 8. Matters Not on the Agenda: th The 54 Tallman Festival is Sunday, August 7, 2011. The Commission has a booth and members sign up to staff it during the day. Gale Price stated a point of clarification related to the Coon’s review. He reported that he spoke with the State of Wisconsin to clarify the documentation and 30-day notification. He also mentioned his conversation with the Gazette regarding the minor clerical error. It is the Historic Commission that determines what is demolished while the State just maintains an historical record of the building. He stated staff will provide a report with a recommendation to the Commission regarding future demolitions. 9. Next Meeting – April 25, 2011 Adjournment: 10.A motion was made by Susan Thompson, seconded by Janine Peterson to adjourn the meeting at 6:20 pm. Motion carried.
