Complex bus service
Updated 10/11/2011
JTS Service to the Youth Sports Complex
Steve Ellis recently questioned the feasibility of providing bus service to the sports complex. Below is
some follow up information. He also asked if there are any grant programs to help kids that can’t
afford bus tokens. I have updated this info sheet from May 2010 with more information.
JYBSA indicates that:
Players need to arrive at the complex starting at 4PM;
Players start leaving the complex from 6:30-8:30PM;
JYBSA does not know how many players might use bus service; and
Season begins last week in April/ first week in May.
Getting to the Complex:
On school days, there is an Extra Service Route (Wright Road Special) that
departs the transfer center at 3:45PM and could get to the complex around 4PM. This route connects
with buses arriving directly from Edison, Franklin and Marshall Middle Schools, Craig and Parker

willing to have the bus route go to the Complex to accommodate Sports Coalition players.
Players would need to let the driver know they need to go to the Complex when they board the
“Wright Road Special” bus.
Transportation from public elementary schools:
Below is detailed info that you could share with
families.
Jackson
- Players could take the Kellogg Special at the corner of Kellogg Avenue and Adel Street
(about 3 blocks north of the school) to the transfer center, arriving at 3:45pm. Then transfer to the
Wright Rd Special and arrive at the Complex about 4pm.
Lincoln
– Players could take the Kellogg Avenue bus at 3:30 PM at the corner of S. Oakhill Avenue
and Conde Street just across the street from the school, to the transfer center, arriving at 3:45pm. Then
transfer to the Wright Rd Special and arrive at the Complex about 4pm.
Madison
– Players could take the 3:30pm West Court Special from Franklin MS to the transfer center,

Washington
– Players could take the West Court Regular at 3:35pm from the corner of North
Washington Street and Greenview Avenue (one block east of the school) to the transfer center, arriving
at 3:45pm. Then transfer to the Wright Rd Special and arrive at the Complex about 4pm.
Wilson
– Players could take the regular Kellogg bus at 3:35pm from the front of the school at
Rockport Road and Lincoln Street to the transfer center, arriving at 3:45pm. Then transfer to the
Wright Rd Special and arrive at the Complex about 4pm.
Players arriving at the Youth Sports Complex would be dropped off on the east side of
Wuthering Hills Drive at the parking lot
. JYBSA may want someone present at the drop off point to
direct players to the correct location.
In planning transportation and practice schedules, please keep in mind that middle school students are
dismissed from school at 3:15PM. Buses leave the schools at approximately 3:25PM, with kids

arriving at home around 4PM. Players that need to take the bus to the complex may find it more time-
efficient to bring their equipment for practices/games with them to school so that they could go directly
to the transfer center, instead of going home first. This will create an additional logistical issue for the
players who will have to keep track of their sports equipment during the school day and be careful not
to misplace schoolbooks, etc. during practice.
Leaving the Complex: The Nightside East route leaves the downtown transfer center at 6:15PM,
7:15PM and 8:15PM M-F and would arrive at the Complex at approximately 6:30PM, 7:30PM
and 8:30PM to pick up players.
Nightside service does allow for “route deviations” as a normal part
of the service, although the deviation to the Sports Complex would be longer (approximately 1 mile
round-trip) than what is normally allowed (approximately ½-2/3 mile). Those players living on the
east side could get home in approximately a half hour from pick up. Those living on the west or south
sides would ride the bus through the east side route and arrive at the transfer center approximately 45
minutes after getting on the bus. They would transfer to the Nightside West route at 7:15PM, 8:15PM
or 9:15 PM to complete their ride home. They could expect to arrive home approximately 5 to 45
minutes after transferring. For example, if a student takes the 8:30PM bus from the Complex, they

deviation is performed, it would be good for a JYBSA representative to call the dispatch line
(755-3150) about a half hour before pick up is needed to ensure the bus swings by the Complex.
Grant Programs to Lower Transportation Cost:
JTS suggests JYBSA contact “Partners in
Prevention” (758-1844) which sponsors a Youth Token program for students to access ‘wholesome
activities’ during the after-school hours and school vacation periods as a deterrent to youth crime and
anti-social behavior. Mr. Hal Robb or Ms. Kate Baldwin are contacts for this program which provides
bus tokens at half-fare as authorized by the City Council.
Future route changes:
JTS will need change their east-side bus routes in late 2011 to accommodate
the new Dean-St. Mary’s hospital located at East Racine Street and Midland Road. Due to budgetary
constraints however, the changes will not allow for an overall increase in service; but rather an
adjustment of the existing east side routes to accommodate citizens travelling to the new hospital. In
the spring of 2011, JTS and the City’s Planning Division will begin the process to determine route
changes. When this process is started, the Sports Coalition will be able to participate in the process and
your group’s feedback regarding possible route adjustments will be considered. We will be happy to
notify a person or persons whom you designate at the time this process begins.
If JYBSA is interested in starting bus service to the sports complex for Spring 2011, please contact JTS
director Dave Mumma at 755-3150 to discuss the details.
