05-Review Of Proposed Ice Rink Plans
REVIEW OF PROPOSED ICE RINK PLANS
As part of the study for the City of Janesville, Rink Management Services
Corporation was asked to review the plans for a proposed twin rink facility. After
review of the floor plan and layout drawings, we find the plans developed by
Simonson & Associates L.L.C. to be quite reasonable. Generally speaking, Rink
Management Services finds no major issues in these plans.
However, we offer up the following suggestions below to maximize space and
increase efficiency. We base this on our practical experience of operating over
37 ice rinks in an 18 year period coupled with our involvement in more than 42
ice rink projects.
?
Plan A1.0: The south ends of rinks 1 and 2 have overhead doors. If the
facility is planning to host a boat show or a non-ice event, these roll up doors
would need to be a minimum of 15' high, but it would be ideal if they could be
20’ high.
?
In addition, if the glass on the south end overheard doors was quick release
glass, it would reduce payroll for setting up community events, concerts, and
shows.
?
Plan A1.1: If cost becomes a factor, rink 1 could reduce the amount of seating
in the bleachers and in the premium area by half.
st
?
Plan A1.2: Baby changing stations should be added to the 1 floor Men’s and
Women’s restrooms. (Rooms 114 and 115.)
?
Adding a bay window in the pro shop on the outside wall would offer better
merchandising and visibility from the street.
?
Ticket room 102 and skate rental room 104 should be combined with no wall
between the two work spaces. This will reduce payroll during low utilization
periods.
?
There is NO area designated for video and arcade games. RMSC
recommends that 500-1,000 sq ft should be identified for an arcade.
?
No area is identified for vending machines. Vending machines will be needed
to service the customers when the concession stands are not open.
?
It is recommended that in concession room 111 there should not be a fixed
counter in the middle of the space. Use tables that can be moved so that the
optimal location for work stations can be decided after operating the food
service.
?
Plan A1.3: Observation. Most locker rooms in our facilities range from 300 to
400 sq ft. Locker rooms 1-4 range from 553 to 661 sq ft, which is a good size
locker room.
?
There is no first aid room, but there are several storage rooms that could be
utilized.
?
The building will be short locker room space if club rooms 1-4 are not used as
locker rooms.
nd
?
Plan A1.4: A seating and food area should be designated for the 2 floor
concessions.
?
The facility will need to designate 2 to 3 rooms or spaces to host birthday
parties if club rooms 5-8 are not being used.
