#1 Board Policy A203 Late Fees and Related Cha May 13, 2010 MEMORANDUM TO: Library Board FROM: Bryan J. McCormick RE: Board Policy A203 Late Fees and Related Charges – Grace Period The library management team recently met and decided to eliminate the 2-day grace period for returned items. In the past the grace period was necessary, as the circulation system did not allow for backdating of returned items, and there were situations where additional time was necessary for internal staff to check-in items. The new RFID system will check-in items in real time. As items are inducted into the sorting system they will immediately be checked-in and cleared from the patron’s account. In addition, the Millenium automation system allows us to backdate items at check-in (ie, items from the book drop locations are backdated a day). These improvements at the check-in station negate the need to have a grace period. Within the ALS system, Beloit Public Library does not have a grace period, so we would have the same policy as our neighbor to the south. For these reasons the management team decided to eliminate the grace period for returned items. Library Board Policy A203 Late Fees and In order to accommodate this adjustment, Related Charges needs to be updated to reflect this change in administrative policy. I Board Policy A203 have attached a copy of the proposed changes to for your review and approval.
