#1 Strategic Plan - progress update May 13, 2010 MEMORANDUM TO: Library Board FROM: Bryan J. McCormick RE: Strategic Plan update The following strategic initiatives have taken place within the last few months: Prioritization of Services -Circulation staff created a schedule that will reflect changes in workflow due to RFID implementation. Additional changes will take place throughout the summer as staff get used to the process and suggest additional changes. A meeting with all circulation staff was held last week addressing the initial changes. -The Reference Dept. has identified priorities within their department, as well as an acknowledgement of where services could be lacking in serving a group of patrons. One area identified was in the need to have a book discussion group for contemporary readers of fiction. The Reading on the Rock discussion group addressed this concern. Library Facility -The staff workroom has been updated to accommodate the RFID sorting machine. -A ‘soft-start’ feature was added to the staff elevator. This will cut down on utility costs. -3 additional study rooms have been drawn up and hopefully will be built in the fall (dependent on funding). These study rooms will be where the CD’s are currently being kept. -The circulation checkout area will undergo a redesign this summer. -A new neighborhood for the Spanish and Do-It-Yourself areas of the collection was created. Partnerships and Communication -LEAD training for staff took place in February. Library staff were placed on teams with the objective to create a program to market the library mission of Read-Learn-Explore-Grow. The 10 teams gave their presentations in early May. rd -A partnership program with the Literacy Connection is scheduled for Oct. 23. -The Communication/Training committee is working on core competencies, and identifying programs for all-staff training. The 3 areas they will initially concentrate their work on include: Customer Service (concentrating on a positive approach) o Flexibility/Adaptability o Interpersonal/Group skills and Communication skills o
