#6 Neighborhood Action Team Report and Budget NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES MEMORANDUM September 10, 2009 TO: Community Development Authority FROM: Kelly Lee, Neighborhood Development Specialist Jennifer Petruzzello, Neighborhood Services Director SUBJECT: Agenda Item #6 - Neighborhood Action Team Report and Budget Request Background: Over the past several years, the Community Development Authority and the City of Janesville have been making an effort to put greater financial resources into the Historic Fourth Ward and Look West neighborhoods. One piece of this support has been directed to the efforts of the Fourth Ward and Look West Neighborhood Action Teams. In 2009, Twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) in Community Block Grant (CDBG) funding was awarded in support of the Neighborhood Action Teams. In addition, $12,000 for large item pick-up was included in the sanitation fund. In 2009, the Neighborhood Action Teams have continued their efforts towards building stronger neighborhoods. Some of their activities and accomplishments for 2009 include: Hosting two Movies in the Park, holding park clean up days, organizing the Bike Rodeo, participating in National Night Out, attending diversity training and the Leadership Development Academy, funding new playground equipment and planting two neighborhood gardens. Funding for the group’s efforts is eligible under the CDBG program as a public service. City staff feels that it is important to continue to support the efforts of the Neighborhood Action Team. Attached you will find a summary of the Action Team’s proposed budget. The proposed budget includes: (summary of major items or significant changes). In recognition of current economic conditions and the reduction in public service dollars that will be available in 2010, the Neighborhood Action Team has reduced their funding request from the current budgeted amount. Members of the Team will be present to further explain their efforts and answer questions regarding this budget request. Recommendation: Staff recommends that the CDA consider the request of the Neighborhood Action Team for $16,000 in public service funding to be included in the 2010 recommended budget. No Action by the CDA is needed tonight, as public service allocations will be made at a special meeting on September 23, 2009. Attachment: (2010 Budget Request) - 1 -
