Jackson St., Janesville, Wisconsin Tuesday, July 21, 2009 6:30pm ROLL CALL I. Members Present: Perrotto, Backenkeller, Hyzer, Peterson, Swanson, Mills, Udell Members Absent: Cunningham Staff Present: Hulick II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES “C” III. PUBLIC COMMENT None IV. NEW BUSINESS None V. OLD BUSINESS 1. Sustainability Initiative Presentation, Committee Member Peterson (20 min) Committee Member Peterson provided the Committee with an overview of his draft Sustainable Initiative Presentation and provided the Committee with a CD-ROM of the draft presentation. Peterson explained that the presentation would be given to City Staff Members to educate, engage, and involve them in Sustainable Initiatives. Peterson indicated that the presentation would also include two group exercises that would further engage City Employees and help them see that they can make a difference in their daily work activities. Peterson indicated that the entire presentation, including the two incorporated group activities would take approximately 90 minutes to complete. Committee discussion ensued regarding the length of the presentation (60 or 90 minutes), who would present this presentation to employees (SJC, Division or Department Heads, City Manager, voice over, DVD, or trained presenters), and where to go from here. 2. Discussion on the Framework of the Green Action Plan, Including Baseline Indicator Determinations (20 min) This item was tabled for further discussion and a future meeting in order to focus on the Sustainable Initiatives Presentation and the Green Building Resolution. 3. Discussion on the Green Building Resolution (20 min) Committee Member’s Swanson and Udell gave a brief verbal presentation of their draft Green Building Resolution. Committee discussion ensued on a variety of clarification questions, points of interest, and how to proceed with this item. Based on Committee comments, Swanson and Udell indicated that they will provide a revised draft to Councilmember Perrotto who will then seek immediate staff input on the draft resolution. VI. CITY STAFF UPDATE Hulick provided a brief verbal overview of the City’s EECBG Submittal. VII. CITY COUNCIL UPDATE 1. Future presentation dates Councilmember Perrotto provided the Committee with a list of the Council’s recently adopted short-term and long term goals. VIII. MATTERS NOT ON THE AGENDA Committee Member Peterson suggested that the Committee create a SJC Logo. Committee Member Udell indicated that she participated in a Community Garden tour the previous week, and expressed her support for those neighborhood initiatives. Committee Member Backenkeller invited the group to attend the August 18 Ad Hoc Committeee for the Rock County Purchase of Development Rights/Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easements (PDR/PACE) meeting at the Rock County Courthouse at 2:30pm Backenkeller expressed an interest in creating and Eco-Friendly Business Award Backenkeller asked if items could be salvaged from the 316 Linn Street demolition project. Hulick indicated that it was his understanding that because the project utilized Federal money, individual citizens would not be allowed to salvage from that project. Backenkeller invited the Committee to a CleanWisconsin.org meeting at the HHFFRRRGGH Inn on Thursday July 23 at 4:00pm. Backenkeller asked that the Committee be involved in the Zoning Code updates. Hulick indicated that, that project had not been started yet. Backenkeller asked for Committee input on the upcoming Environmental Cafés at the Hedberg Public Library this fall. Backenkeller indicated that the Sustainable Janesville Committee creates a Facebook page. Councilmember Perrotto cautioned about the use of such social networking sites for a City Committee. Committee Chairperson Mills reiterated his idea of creating Sustainable Janesville Awards for the Community. IX. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned at 8:47pm
