STATEMENT OF POLICY Adequately lighted streets are an essential element in maintaining a safe environment for the city’s citizens. Street lighting has been demonstrated to be a major crime deterrent and contributes greatly to the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike. Accordingly, it is the stated policy that all public streets, open to the public, shall be equipped with street lights as soon after such opening as is practical. For newly developed areas, this would normally be immediately following the installation of curb and gutter and paving. Residential street lights will be installed consistent to a stated spacing plan as approved by the Director of Public Works. Lighting in industrial and commercial areas will be installed as necessary. It is recognized that aesthetic considerations in street lighting installations in our city is also of great importance. Consequently, as far as is practical, street lighting installations shall utilize underground wiring in those locations where other electrical distribution wires are underground. However, in no case will aesthetic considerations be allowed to compromise the safety of the city’s citizens. Therefore, in no case, will street lights be excluded from any developing areas requiring land divisions, subject to City Engineer discretion.
